Ms. Johna Sutton, principal at Siegrist Elementary, will introduce Tyler Crawford and Sara Stapleton, physical education instructors at Siegrist Elementary, to the members of the Board of Education.
Siegrist Elementary's 3rd-5th graders participated in KC Bike Walk's "BLAST" (Bicycle Learning and Safety Training) program in late September as part of Siegrist PE Teachers' efforts to increase lessons on lifetime activities. This program teaches students the rules of the road as well as a "ABC Quick Check" for safety. Students with little or no experience received instruction on how to ride bikes, while more "expert" bikers participated in obstacle course teaching riders how to apply road safety skills, such as hand signals to communicate stops and turns, how to handle rougher terrain, obey all traffic signs/laws, how to ride on the right side of the road, and how to safely check for traffic behind them. All riders learned the importance of doing an ABC Quick check before getting on a bike (Air pressure, Brakes, Chain, Quick release to adjust seats if needed, and Check yourself - helmet, shoes tied, no loose clothing). All students received two, 50-minute lessons with professional bike instructors from KC Bike Walk. Thank you to Coach Stapleton and Coach Crawford for organizing and Siegrist PTA for helping to fund this program.
